The Ireton Area Historical Society (IAHS) was founded in 1978 to preserve the history of Ireton and its surrounding townships and to share that history with the public. The charter members were inspired by the U.S. Bicentennial celebrated in 1976 and by the then-upcoming centennial of Ireton’s founding.
Early members of the IAHS preserved and shared the town’s history through the publication of the “Centennial Book”: Ireton, A Proud History, 1882-1982. We are now delighted to be able to share some of that history with you via the Internet.
We hope that you enjoy the slideshows and history information. If you have information or photos that you would like to add or if you have questions about Ireton’s history or about your Ireton area family history, please feel free to contact the IAHS.
IN MEMORY OF JANET BROWN
(Sept. 21, 1955 – Dec. 27, 2015)
Janet Brown, a long time Ireton are resident, originally created this website for the Ireton Historical Society, to help preserve past and present history of the Ireton Community. She invested countless hours in researching and recording community, military and cemetery history. This project was still going on at the time of her unfortunate death.
Janet’s legal background and computer proficiency made her uniquely qualified for this undertaking. She did a phenomenal job not only in recording history but also in grant writing, and was totally committed to obtaining military and genealogical data. With this commitment the website is unique in many ways.
With the blessing of Janet’s family and the IAHS, the website has been graciously donated to the City of Ireton to maintain and continue the projects that Janet and the IAHS initiated.
The City has taken on the responsibility and hopes to continue to give you the most accurate information on its history and current events. Our mission is to retain all the original data, and with the help of others, to update as needed to keep the community informed.
