History
The town of Ireton, located in Reading Township, Iowa,
originated in 1882 when the 12 original blocks were
platted. The town was incorporated in 1890 and the
first mayor and council convened in November of that
year.
In 1934, Angie Elder Ferguson, daughter of one of the
pioneers of Reading Township, prepared a "History of
Reading Township". We have included it
here to give background on Ireton's history.
Although there have been a number of newspapers in
Ireton through the years, many issues were lost to fire.
In 1982, the Ireton Area Historical Society prepared a
504-page book about the town and its residents,
including many family histories. The book,
entitled "Ireton, A Proud Heritage, 1882-1982" is,
perhaps, the best existing source about the town and its
history.
