History
The town of Ireton, located in Reading Township, Iowa,
originated in 1882 when the 12 original blocks were
platted and the railroad arrived. The town was incorporated in 1890 and the
first mayor and council convened in November of that
year.
In 1934, Angie Elder Ferguson, daughter of one of the
pioneers of Reading Township, prepared a "History of
Reading Township". We have included it
here to give background on Ireton's history.
In 1982, the Ireton Area Historical Society prepared a
504-page book about the town and its residents,
including many family histories. The book,
entitled "Ireton, A Proud Heritage, 1882-1982" is,
perhaps, the best existing source about the town and its
history.
In recent years, the
Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society and the libraries in
Sioux County worked together to
compile and digitize local newspapers. Not all
of Ireton's newspapers are included but this provides an
incredible resource for historical information about
Ireton and Sioux County.

return them to you immediately.
Enjoy the photos - we've provided captions where
