In May 2010, Bertram Post
#276 of the American Legion began raising funds for a
memorial honoring veterans of the Ireton
area. The granite pillars and benches
of the memorial are now in place.
Still to be completed are the roadway
leading to and around the memorial, the
flagpoles arrayed to the east of the
memorial, lighting and landscaping.
The memorial
is located in the western 1/4 of Pleasant
Hill Cemetery -- a section recently platted
for gravesites. There will be a new
entrance off Ireton's Main Street on the
southern east-west road of the cemetery.
As you enter, you will see the view of the
memorial in the top photo. Flagpoles
bearing the United States, Iowa and POW/MIA
flag will be arrayed behind the monument.
The new Memorial is directly west of
Ireton's Civil War Monument.
The center
granite pillar bears an etching of the
United States flag and the inscription:
"Ireton Area Veterans Memorial" "In
Memory Of Those Who Have Served And
Sacrificed For God and Country" "You
Are Not Forgotten". Bertram Post 276
is inscribed at the top of the pillar.
To the left of the center pillar are
pillars representing World Wars I and II and
to the right are pillars representing
Korea and Vietnam. The pillars bear
the seals of the United States Air Force,
Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and
Merchant Marine. The eastern side
also refers to Lebanon, Granada, Panama, the
Gulf War and the War on Terrorism. The
eastern side of the center pillar bears an
etching of an eagle in flight and a quote
from John 15:13: "Greater Love Hath No
Man Than This, That He Lay Down His Life For
His Friends."
The memorial was
designed by Rausch Granite of Sioux Falls.
Bertram Post 276 of the American Legion
raised more than $50,000 to cover the cost
of the Memorial. Plans are underway
for completion and dedication.
Thank You To Everyone
Who Donated
To The Veterans Memorial Project.
Special Thanks to Bertram Post 276 and Its
Officers for Undertaking This Project For
The Ireton Community.
Ireton Area Veterans
The Veterans
Memorial honors the service of all area
veterans but does not bear the names of
individuals. To recognize the service
of each individual, the Ireton Area
Historical Society is creating a
"Veterans Memory Book". Please look over that
project and assist with names, information
and photos if you can.
There have
been many veterans in Ireton's history and
compiling a list of each veteran is
challenging. The following list of
veterans is that read by the American Legion
at Memorial Day services. A more
complete list of Ireton Veterans - in
alphabetical order - may be found
here.
We welcome
additions and corrections - please
e-mail them to us.
